Skin Deep

Photos-Interview-Design

A Book and Exhibition delving into the lived experiences of tattooed individuals.

SKIN DEEP is an artistic study of the lived experiences of 9 tattooed individuals. The book is meant to serve as a collection of stories of those who have a variety of ink, telling different perspectives of how they navigate life with tattoos or because of their tattoos. The stories range from students in college, tattoo artists, and former incarcerated gang members. Telling these stories, through the power of photography and design,
was a way for me to address the stigma and nuance towards the tattooed individual. Showcasing that
tattoos are not just skin deep.
The design process consisted of photoshoots with each individual and a virtual interview afterwards. Each photo carefully curated to showcase the personality and story of each individual. All content has been compiled into a 12”x12” hard cover book with each page designed per interview.

For this study, I conducted a self tattooing session time lapse to play while exhibit guests take in the work.
